FAQs

I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?

Not at all. People who ask for help know when they need it and have the courage to reach out. Everyone needs help now and then. Asking for help means you're smart not weak.

What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?

A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way; teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Furthermore, therapy is completely confidential. You won’t have to worry about others “knowing my business.” Lastly, if your situation provokes a great deal of negative emotion, and you’ve been confiding in a friend or family member, there is the risk that once you are feeling better you could start avoiding that person so you aren’t reminded of those negative emotions.

Why shouldn’t I just take medication?

Medication can be effective, but it alone cannot solve all issues. Medication can be effective for treating symptoms, but not the problem. Medication is often needed in conjunction with therapy.

How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?

Therapy works differently for each individual person. Some people benefit from just having someone to talk to that can provide feedback for various situations or issues. Other people require more therapeutic techniques in order to manage their symptoms, which will require some effort on their part. I don't believe in "one size fits all therapy". Based on our initial appointment I will propose a course of treatment that I feel will be most effective for your particular problem. If at any point you do not feel comfortable with a particular technique, or feel it is not effective, we will stop and try something different. Sometimes I utilize multiple techniques at one time. We will work together to find a solution that works for you.

How long will it take?

Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time therapy can take varies. Depending on the severity of your issues we will probably schedule sessions weekly or bi-weekly for several weeks. As the severity of your symptoms decrease we will gradually decrease the amount of time in between sessions.

I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?
